Those of you who have been following me since the beginning of the blog know that for the past couple of years I’ve been struggling with weight gain in spite of maintaining a fairly healthy diet. So when the guys from HomeDNA reached out to me asking if I’d like to give the Healthy Weight Analysis + Report Kit a try, I was stoked.

Their product is an extremely comprehensive DNA weight analysis that tells a lot about your body’s ability to lose weight, burn fat, utilize certain foods and nutrients and respond to exercise. It’s based on YOUR DNA, which makes the report unique to you and your needs. I’m still pretty in disbelief on how spot on some of their finding were, but I’m going to get more into that below.

I started exercising about 2 months ago, but since I don’t follow any exercise programs, all I do is count my nutrients and calories using My Fitness Pal, and intuitively use cardio and strength training machines at the gym. I noticed that after I started strength training I started losing a lot more weight than I did previously when my workout routine consisted of daily 30 min sessions of cardio. I’m down almost 10lbs in less than 2 months.

After reading my report, I found out that my body has enhanced body composition response to strength training, but it has low Fat Loss Response to Cardio and Below Average Fitness Response to Cardio, which basically means that I need a lot more cardio sessions (thinks more days and minutes) to be able to get fit and that I don’t benefit from high-intensity cardio sessions, but rather longer and more moderate one. On the other hand, my genes make me have an easier time burning fat and building muscles by strength training. Only great news so far!

It was a bummer to find out that my weight loss response to diet & exercise is below average. Blame it on my parents! That explains why I’ve been having such a hard time losing weight for the past two years. The good news is that I can obviously still lose all the weight I want, it just won’t happen as easy to me as it is to other people.

I also found out that I’m below average on things like Vitamins A, B6 and D tendency, which is great to know because now I can make sure to always include those on my meals and supplements. Another finding by Home DNA Healthy Weight Analysis + Report is that my Protein Utilization is Slightly Enhanced Fat Utilization is Normal and Carb Utilization is Enhanced, which in English means that if I follow a diet rich in whole foods/grains, low or moderate in fats and moderate in protein, I’ll be able to lose and maintain a healthy weight.

Another amazing thing about the Home DNA Healthy Weight Analysis + Report Kit is that it gives you a list of custom exercises - they have gym options and at home options - and a custom 7 day meal plan, so you can kick start those diet and exercise plans if you haven’t yet, or make some tweaks on the ones you already have - my case.
